If you are managing a website or want a career in web development you will need to know how to capture, design and manipulate images. This practical beginners workshop will help you understand different image types, when to use them and how to optimise them for fast display in a web page.
This workshop seeks to provide basic graphic design skills and an understanding of the main principles of graphic design. It is aimed at complete beginners to graphic design and seeks to encourage progression into further study.

What you will learn
The aim of the workshop is to equip you with the knowledge and tools to understand, design and manipulate images for a website. It is a practical course with code examples, coding activities and plenty of guidance to help you.
Module1A. Image Copyright, Licences and Use
Understand the basics of copyright law for the use of images and image licenses, including Creative Commons, stock photo agency licenses and similar. Learn why you cannot just use images you find on social media and through Internet search engines.
Module 1B. Image Source Libraries
Learn about royalty free images and image source libraries where you can buy different licenses to use images for different mediums (e.g. print, web etc)
Module 1C. Image Editing Software
Discover free and paid for software and standard tools used by Graphic Designers.
Module 1D. Image Formats
Learn about the different types of images and under what circumstances to use them.
Module 1E. Transparent Backgrounds
Understand why and when to use transparent backgrounds on images.
Module 1F. Image Optimisation, Resolution and File Size
Learn why it is important and how to to get the best quality image with the smallest file size.
At the end of the workshop, participants will:
- have a basic understanding of image types and file sizes.
- have an overview of different graphic design software uses.
- have a basic understanding of image optimisation techniques.
This module covers creating, manipulating and optimising images for websites. It is explained in plain English with minimal technical jargon.
